Does the personal assistant model actually serve most users?
The personal-assistant framing dominates AI product strategy, but does it reflect what typical users actually want? This explores whether the design assumes problems that don't exist for most people.
The personal-assistant framing has become the default product imagination for consumer AI: a system that handles your email, manages your calendar, books your travel, drafts your messages, summarizes your meetings. The framing has captured significant investment and product strategy across the industry. The implicit claim is that everyone has these problems and would benefit from automating them.
The empirical pattern does not support the implicit claim. A meaningful share of users actively does not want these tasks automated. Email triage is a way of staying current with people they care about; calendar management is a way of holding their own time; message drafting is a way of expressing themselves rather than a chore to be eliminated. For these users, the personal assistant is solving a problem they do not have, and the automation removes engagement they value. The narrow segment that does benefit — typically time-pressured professionals with high-volume routine communication — is real but not representative.
The over-generalization has consequences. Product roadmaps over-invest in assistant features that most users will not adopt. Marketing produces expectations that do not match reality for the majority. Onboarding flows assume motivations the user does not have. Designers building these products are calibrating to a user persona that exists at the tail of the distribution rather than near the mode.
The deeper pattern is that AI is uniquely able to do many things, but uniquely able is not the same as desired. The design question is not "what can AI automate?" but "what does this user want done?" These overlap less than the personal-assistant framing presumes. Use-case design for AI requires resisting the pull of the technically impressive use case in favor of the use case the specific user actually wants.
The strongest counterargument: even if the personal assistant appeals to a narrow segment, that segment is large enough to support the products. Possibly true commercially, but the framing distorts the broader design discourse — practitioners working on adjacent problems get pulled toward the assistant template even when their users want something else. The narrowness matters even when the segment supports a market.
