Does instrumental AI reproduce pre-Enlightenment knowledge structures?

Does AI's optimization-driven design reintroduce the unverifiability, authority-dependence, and cognitive surrender that characterized pre-modern thought? This connects technical architecture to historical patterns of intellectual regression.

What do language models actually know? What happens to social order when AI removes ritual constraints?

Adorno and Horkheimer distinguished reason in its emancipatory mode from reason in its instrumental mode. Emancipatory reason questions, considers ends, takes responsibility for what it produces. Instrumental reason serves given ends, calculates means, treats its products as outputs to be optimized. Their argument was that Enlightenment, by elevating reason as the supreme value, gradually narrowed reason to its instrumental form — efficiency, control, prediction — and thereby reproduced the unfreedom it was meant to overcome.

AI fits this analysis with disturbing precision. The technology was developed to extend human cognitive capacity. As deployed, it operates almost entirely in instrumental mode: produce more output, satisfy users more reliably, generate persuasive text efficiently, optimize for measurable metrics. The training process is itself a metric-optimization regime — RLHF specifies what to optimize for and the model learns to produce more of it. There is no equivalent of emancipatory reason in the training loop; there is no signal that selects for outputs that question their own production or take responsibility for downstream use.

Instrumental intelligence reproduces the structural features of pre-Enlightenment knowledge. Three features in particular. First, unverifiability: the output cannot be tested against an underlying reality the way emancipatory reasoning could be tested (AI knowledge is structurally hearsay — ungrounded, modified in every retelling, unverifiable against any stable source). Second, appeal to authority: the user accepts the output because it comes from "the AI," a source whose authority is given rather than earned through demonstrated reasoning. Third, suppression of individual judgment: cognitive surrender becomes the operative posture, where the user accepts the output rather than performing the judgment work the output was supposed to support.

The Adorno-Horkheimer parallel is not loose analogy. It is the same dialectical pattern operating at a new level of technical sophistication. Enlightenment reason narrowed to instrumental reason; reason narrowed produces myth. Enlightenment intelligence narrowed to instrumental intelligence; intelligence narrowed produces hearsay. Both produce surface mastery and structural regression simultaneously. Does AI repeat the Enlightenment's reversal into its opposite? is the broader claim; this is the mechanism-level specification.

The strongest counterargument: AI is not value-laden in the Frankfurt sense; it is just a statistical tool. The reply is that the loss function and post-training procedures are explicit value-specifications — what to optimize for, what to suppress, what counts as success. There is no value-neutral AI; there is only AI whose values are unexamined.
