By mid-2025, roughly a third to half of new web content may be AI-written — and that share mysteriously stopped climbing.

How much of new web content is AI-generated by mid-2025?

This explores how much of the content newly published on the web was made by AI as of mid-2025, and how far we can trust those numbers.

This explores how much of what's newly published online is AI-generated as of mid-2025, and how reliable those measurements are. The short answer is roughly a third to a half, depending on what you count and who's counting. An Internet Archive analysis of sites published from 2022 to 2025 found that about 35% of new websites are AI-generated or AI-assisted How much of the internet is AI-generated now?. Graphite's study of 55,400 web articles puts the share of mostly-AI articles higher: 35.9% within a year of ChatGPT's launch, 48% by the two-year mark, and then holding at around 50% from early 2025 onward Has AI-generated content stopped growing on the web?.

The pause at 50% is the strange part, and nobody has explained it yet. One idea is that AI articles rank poorly in search, so there's less reason to keep publishing them. Another is that newer models are simply better at slipping past detectors. Graphite's data tests neither idea, and it doesn't report traffic, false-positive rates, or how the detectors handle drafts that people have edited Why did AI article share stop growing after 2025?. That matters because every figure here is really a count of what a detector flagged. It isn't a direct count of AI writing. People can't fill the gap either: a review of 30 studies found that humans spot AI-made text, images and voices at about chance level Can people reliably spot content made by AI?.

A single web-wide figure also hides large differences between platforms. Using one classifier on 2.4 million posts, researchers found AI attribution on Medium and Quora rising from about 2% to about 38% between January 2022 and October 2024, while Reddit only went from 1.3% to 2.5% Is AI-generated content rising faster on some platforms?. On LinkedIn, one detector flagged 81% of a fixed sample of posts from July 2026 as likely AI, up from about 50% in late 2024 How much LinkedIn content is AI-generated right now?. Where people post for professional visibility, AI fills the space quickly. Where people come to talk to each other, it barely gets in.

The more surprising finding is about what changes in the content, not just how much of it there is. The same Internet Archive study found that as AI's share grew, new web writing became less varied in its ideas and more upbeat in tone, while factual accuracy stayed the same How much of the internet is AI-generated now?. The web isn't getting obviously worse. It's getting more alike. That has knock-on effects for AI systems that search the web: when 67% of a collection of documents is synthetic, more than 80% of what a search system retrieves comes from synthetic sources, yet answer accuracy still looks fine. The loss of variety goes unnoticed until something breaks Does synthetic content in search results hide ecosystem decay?. Volume also works as a strategy on its own. On one short-video platform, AI creators matched human creators' total engagement by posting more, even though viewers liked each AI video less Can AI creators match human creators through posting volume alone?.

How much of the internet is AI-generated now?

Internet Archive analysis (2022-2025) shows 35% of newly published websites are AI-generated or AI-assisted. This correlates with declined semantic diversity and increased positive sentiment, but factual accuracy and stylistic diversity remain unchanged.

Has AI-generated content stopped growing on the web?

Graphite's analysis of 55.4k web articles found AI-primary content rose to 35.9% within 12 months of ChatGPT, reached 48% by month 24, then stabilized near 50% from Q1 2025 onward. The plateau may reflect poor search performance of AI articles.

Why did AI article share stop growing after 2025?

The reported 50% plateau could result from weak search performance for AI articles or improved AI models evading detection, but Graphite's excerpt tests neither explanation and reports no traffic data, false-positive rates, or accuracy on edited drafts.

Can people reliably spot content made by AI?

A 30-study systematic review found that humans cannot reliably distinguish AI-generated from human-created content across text, image, and voice modalities. Accuracy generally clusters around chance and has not kept pace with improvements in AI realism.

Is AI-generated content rising faster on some platforms?

Analysis of 2.4M posts using the OSM-Det classifier found AI attribution rates jumping from ~2% to ~38% on Medium and Quora between January 2022 and October 2024, but rising only from 1.31% to 2.45% on Reddit. The surge began in December 2022.

How much LinkedIn content is AI-generated right now?

Originality.ai's fixed-method detector classified 4,061 of 5,000 public LinkedIn posts from July 2026 as Likely AI, a rise from approximately 50% in late 2024. The measurement tracks a consistent sample across nine topics to establish a trend, though it represents detector-defined shares rather than platform-wide estimates.

Does synthetic content in search results hide ecosystem decay?

When 67% of a corpus becomes synthetic, over 80% of retrieved results shift to synthetic sources while answer accuracy remains high, masking the loss of source diversity. This creates fragility: high accuracy resting on a monoculture collapses when that monoculture is poisoned.

Can AI creators match human creators through posting volume alone?

AIGC creators on a Chinese short-video platform uploaded more videos and achieved comparable total engagement to human creators, even though consumers showed lower valid-view and full-view rates for AI-generated videos. Lower marginal effort in AI production enables this scale-over-preference dynamic.
